The short answer
An accent wall works best on a single uninterrupted surface that draws attention naturally, such as a headboard or dining wall. We repair and prime that wall, center the pattern, match every seam and trim to clean edges, usually finishing in a day.
One papered wall can change how a room feels without committing the whole space to a bold print. In Pompano Beach and the surrounding towns, accent walls show up behind beds, along the dining side of open living areas, inside entry nooks and on the short wall at the end of a hallway. Because only one surface carries the pattern, every flaw on that surface gets noticed, and so does every seam. Our accent wall service focuses on getting that single elevation flat, sealed and precisely laid out, so the paper reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a patch of color.
Picking the wall that earns the paper
Not every wall makes a good feature. The strongest candidates are surfaces your eye lands on as you enter: the wall behind a bed, a fireplace or media wall, the far end of a narrow room, or the backdrop to a dining table. A wall with few interruptions lets the pattern show; one broken up by three windows, a thermostat and a doorway tends to look busy.
Light matters too. Many homes near the coast have large sliders and windows facing east or west, and strong sun can wash out pale prints or fade some natural fibers over time. For a sunlit wall, a deeper color or a vinyl-coated product may hold up better. In a darker interior room, a metallic or high-contrast paper can bring some life in.
An accent wall is also a sensible first step if you are unsure about wallpaper. You get a strong visual result, the material order stays small, and if your taste changes later, only one surface needs stripping.
Getting the surface ready
Prep is where an accent wall succeeds or fails. We start by removing outlet covers, switch plates and anything mounted to the wall, then examine the surface with a work light held close to the plane so ridges and dents cast shadows. Concrete block homes often have plaster with fine stress cracks, while newer drywall may show tape lines or nail pops.
Each defect gets filled, sanded and checked again. If the wall has a heavy orange-peel or knockdown texture, we skim coat it smooth. Glossy paint gets scuffed so primer can bond. Finally we roll on a wallcovering primer suited to the paper type. Primer evens out how quickly paste soaks in, helps the paper slide into position, and makes eventual removal far easier on the drywall facing.
On an exterior-facing wall, we also check for dampness. In our humid summers, a wall with a moisture problem will push paste out of the seams and lift edges, so we would rather find that issue before the paper goes up.
The installation, step by step
With one wall, layout is everything. Here is how we approach it:
- Measure the full width and height and confirm the pattern repeat printed on the roll label
- Find the visual center, often the middle of the bed or the fireplace, and decide whether a motif or a seam should sit on that line
- Snap a plumb line from the center so the first strip hangs perfectly vertical even if the corners are out of square
- Cut strips with extra length at the upper and lower ends, matching each one to the strip before it on the table
- Paste or activate the paper according to the manufacturer and let it book for the recommended time
- Hang, smooth from the center out to push air toward the edges, and butt each seam tight without overlapping
- Roll seams lightly, then wipe paste from the face and adjacent paint immediately
- Trim at the ceiling line, baseboard and side corners with a sharp blade against a wide knife, changing blades often
- Cut openings for outlets and switches, then reinstall covers once the paper has settled
What drives the cost of an accent wall
Because the area is small, labor tends to be driven by details rather than square footage. The condition of the wall is usually the biggest factor: a smooth, sound surface needs only primer, while a textured or patched wall may need a skim coat and drying time before we can hang anything.
The paper itself counts. Pre-pasted and peel-and-stick products go up faster than unpasted papers, while grasscloth, hand-printed and oversized mural panels demand slower, more careful handling. A large pattern repeat means more waste and more time spent aligning each strip. Ceiling height also plays a role; a two-story wall in a Coconut Creek or Parkland great room needs scaffolding or tall ladders, and each strip is longer and harder to manage.
Finally, interruptions such as windows, built-in shelving or a wall-mounted TV bracket add cutting and fitting time.
Looking after your feature wall
Give the paper time to cure. Keep the AC running and the room at a steady temperature for a couple of days, and avoid hanging art or pushing furniture against the wall until it has fully dried.
For routine care, dust with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum brush attachment. Washable and vinyl papers can take a lightly damp sponge; natural fibers and uncoated papers should stay dry. If a seam ever lifts, press it down and call us rather than adding household glue, which can stain the face. On a sunny wall, sheer curtains or UV film on the glass will slow fading.
