The short answer
Grasscloth can look wonderful in Deerfield Beach homes if it goes into climate-controlled rooms away from steam and constant door traffic. We prime with a tinted primer, sequence the rolls for shading, and hang with nonstaining paste and soft brushes.
A woven grasscloth wall fits the easygoing coastal style common in Deerfield Beach: sandy neutrals, soft greens, driftwood tones and a texture you want to run your hand across. It is also a material that rewards patience and punishes shortcuts. Located only about two miles from Deerfield Beach in Pompano Beach, we install natural and faux grasscloth across 33441 and 33442, in beachside condos, canal-front homes and older block ranch houses west of the highway. Before you order rolls, it helps to know how the material behaves near the ocean and which rooms suit it.
What makes grasscloth special and tricky
Each roll is made by weaving plant fibers such as seagrass, sisal, jute or paper weave and bonding them to a backing sheet. No two rolls are identical. Color shifts, fiber thickness varies, and seams are visible because there is no printed pattern to hide them. Many people love this handmade quality; it gives a wall depth that printed paper cannot match.
The tricky part is that the face is unprotected. Paste, water or fingerprints leave marks that cannot be washed off. Installation is therefore slower and cleaner than with ordinary paper, and any mistake is permanent.
The coastal factor
Near the ocean, the air carries more moisture and some salt. Natural fibers absorb that moisture and swell slightly, then shrink as the AC dries the room. Over many cycles, seams can open and edges can lift if the material was hung on an unsealed wall or in a room with big humidity swings.
We manage this by acclimating the rolls inside your home before hanging, keeping the air conditioning at its usual setting, priming the wall to seal it, and choosing walls away from balcony sliders. In a beachfront unit where the doors stay open, faux grasscloth is often the smarter choice.
- Acclimate rolls in the room before installation
- Keep the AC at your normal setting during and after the job
- Choose interior walls rather than ones beside open doors
- Use a pigmented primer to seal and even out the surface
- Consider vinyl faux grasscloth for kitchens, baths and rentals
Sequencing the rolls
Before cutting a single strip, we open every roll and check the lot numbers. We then lay strips side by side under natural light and arrange them so neighboring pieces are as close as possible in tone. Strips from the same roll are kept together. For some products, reversing alternate strips evens out the shading; for others, it makes things worse. We test before deciding.
This step takes time, but it is the main reason one grasscloth wall looks harmonious and another looks like patchwork.
Prep on older Deerfield Beach walls
Many homes here are concrete block with plaster on the inside. Plaster can be uneven or show fine cracks that a thin weave may highlight. We fill, sand and then roll on a pigmented primer, often tinted to match the grasscloth's base color, because some lighter weaves allow the wall color to show through.
In condos, drywall is the norm. Glossier paint finishes are scuffed so primer bonds, and any old wallpaper is removed and the adhesive washed away first.
Hanging without marking the face
Clear, nonstaining paste is applied to the back of each strip with a roller, keeping the edges just covered and never flooded. The strip rests folded for the time the maker specifies, then goes on the wall and is smoothed with a soft brush. Seams are butted and pressed lightly. Edges are cut with a fresh blade almost every time. If paste reaches the front, we blot with clean water at once instead of rubbing.
Care and nearby service
Dust grasscloth occasionally with a soft brush. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun where possible, since natural dyes fade. If a spot appears, blot it gently; do not scrub. We serve Deerfield Beach, Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Beach, Coconut Creek, Boca Raton and Margate.
